The VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS) Perioperative Nurse Manager is a professional nurse who, when delegated by the Chief of Surgery, provides leadership and assumes responsibility for monitoring of staff clinical competence and work p erformance through ongoing assessment, adequacy of staffing, conduct and discipline issues, providing necessary training and supporting performance improvement.

The Perioperative Nurse Manager is accountable to the Chief of Surgery, and demonstrates leadership in coordinating the management of complex patient care. Uses collaborative strategies in conjunction with the Perioperative Assistant Nurse Manager with all VASNHCS departments in order to maximize patient care. Identifies issues that need to be addressed, analyzes it, and then reports possible implementation interventions to the Chief of Surgery. Duties include, but are not limited to:
Applies the nursing process to systems or processes at the unit/team/work group level to improve care.
Provides leadership and serves as a resource for clients and staff in addressing ethical issues.
Demonstrates leadership by involving others in improving care.
Supports and enhances client self-determination. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information, including electronic, print, and conversations.
Maintains professional knowledge and skills based on current evidence based practice.
Demonstrates leadership by sharing knowledge with colleagues or students to enhance professional growth, development and practice.
Formally shares information gained from continuing education experiences within or across units and/or within the medical center.
Coaches and precepts students and novice nursing staff members.
Evaluates practice of self and others using professional standards, relevant statues and regulations.
Collaborates and develops relationships both internally and externally to better meet the patient's needs.
Actively participates with the nurse manager in development of policies, procedures, and standards to promote evidenced-based patient-driven care
Supports the facility's EEO/affirmative action programs by executing assigned duties a nd responsibilities in a professional manner.
Guides others in the recognition of and participates in the resolution of ethical issues.
Identifies and assesses resource utilization and safety issues, taking appropriate action under the supervision of the nurse manager.
Will be responsible for the direct supervision of the departments Nursing Assistants and Health Technicians-Surgical.

Work schedule: Full time, Mon-Fri 0700-1530 position with the possibility of travel, call, and working on holidays and weekends.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship:
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: 5 years Operating Room

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/e xperience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Mast er's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
