Schedule and Benefits
Shifts vary 8 to 12 hours, days/evenings/nights
Occasional weekends and holidays are required
On-Call and Call-Back required (rotation is typically 1 in 6)

Minimum Qualifications
License/Certification: Active, Unrestricted RDMS registration and current BLS
Education: Graduation from a medical sonography program accredited by the CAAHEP
Experience: Minimum 12 months full-time ultrasound experience within the last 24 months
Security: must be able to pass a government background check

Specific Tasks

Knowledge of anatomy and physiology including an in-depth understanding of the functionality of the major sys! tems and internal organs in order to interpret requests to rec! ognize the need for additional/correct exams. The ability to demonstrate anatomy, obtain pertinent patient history, laboratory results, and physical findings.
Skill to apply such knowledge to perform functional imaging, use of complex equipment and setting in which measurements are critical.
Knowledge of sonography physics, principles, and equipment used to perform Ultrasound examinations.
Skill to adjust instrument controls to optimize image quality, and to insure safe and effective equipment operation.
Knowledge of basic patient care practices to maintain infection control precautions, anticipate and respond to needs of the patient, identify a life-threatening situation, and carry out emergency care.
Skill in oral and written communications necessary to maintain clinical records, interact with the interpreting radiologist, educate health care providers, technologists, and their support personnel in the appropriate application of ultrasound practices an! d principals. Technologist must also be able to communicate medical terms, procedures, and instructions to patients.
Basic knowledge and/or experience in using automated data system and computer programs to support unit operations.
Sonographers’ will receive exam orders from attending physicians. From practitioner's clinical history, performs requested examinations in accordance with established protocols. Receives patients, explains methods of procedures, positions patients, and makes adjustments necessary for the required examination, and determines any special patient preparation that will be necessary.
Sonographers’ will monitor vital signs of patient as required by patient condition, including heart rate, blood pressure, and notifies radiologist of any significant change as indicated.
Sonographers’ will interview patient and obtains medical history prior to examinations. Correlates the clinical history with the examination to be performed and obta! ins the results from other pertinent diagnostic tests to correlate with! the study. Assist in determining presence of allergies and or contraindications to performance of invasive studies. Ensures appropriate personnel are made aware of any conditions which may affect or potentially complicate the procedure. Obtains necessary forms and ensures they are signed and completed in IAW clinic requirements.
Sonographers’ will consult directly with assigned radiologist for the day so they can consult with the physicians from a variety of specialties such as obstetrics, gynecology, internal medicine, and surgery regarding the patient's pertinent past medical history, preliminary diagnosis, and condition so this can be correlated if necessary prior to the performance of the examination.
Sonographers’ will independently perform the full spectrum of diagnostic ultrasound examinations of inpatients and outpatients. To include but not limited to; OB Limited/Complete, Pelvic/Transvaginal, Abdomen Limited/Complete, Kidney Complete, Breast, Scrotal,! Thyroid, Carotid, DVT and dynamic mass. Examinations may include; assesses patient's conditions and adjusts equipment to vary technique to accommodate critically ill, immobile, and physically handicapped patients; makes adjustments in patient assessment to accommodate adjustments in techniques and instrumentation required for the performance of the examination; determine when examinations are of diagnostic quality and when enough information is gathered to complete the study; however the radiologists have final approving authority; modifies and adapts examination to the, patient and their medical problems on the basis of information gained during the examination with radiologist’s approval; assists radiologist and/or other physicians in performing invasive diagnostic procedures; notifies radiologists of significant studies requiring their immediate attention or visualization while patient is undergoing examination; prepares all documentation to meet or exceed established! standards of the MTF to include but not limited to: timeliness, legibi! lity, accuracy, content and signature.
Attends and participates in meetings, staff conferences, and other appropriate activities as directed by the Department Supervisor, Diagnostic Imaging Commander/Chief, or higher authority.
Provides clinical training/precepting to ultrasound students & staff in the performance of ultrasound examinations and procedures as required. Must have preceptor training provided by SSgt Baer or any current Radiology Phase II instructor prior to precepting.
Retrieves and inputs information to and from the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) system.
Retrieves and inputs information to and from the Composite Health Care System (CHCS) System.
Responsible for weekly equipment maintenance, cleanliness of work area, and maintains adequate supplies in work area.
Performs portable procedures in surgery, Intensive Care Units, or other locations deemed necessary by the Supervisor and/or radiologist.
Performs basic nu! rsing techniques as related to radiology including emergency cardiac arrest procedures, principles and applications of hypodermics, intravenous injections and sterile field operating room procedures.
Physical Demands : The work involves regular and prolonged periods of standing, bending, reaching, and stooping, as well as lifting and moving patients. Good near visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, is necessary. Assisting patients who are unconscious or disabled requires considerable effort and working in awkward positions. Heavy lifting of all patients is done only with the help of other employees.
