Appointment Information: Applicants selected for this position may be appointed to a temporary appointment,not to exceed one year and one day, pending completion of boarding process. KEY REQUIREMENTS

Dental assistants at this level serve as staff dental assistants for more routine patient care and perform some complex patient pro! cedures under general supervision of more experienced dental assistants or dental supervisor. The incumbent assists the dentist in aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision.

Work Schedule: Full-Time, 40 hours per week, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm, Monday-Friday

This position is covered by the bargaining unit QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy

English Language Proficiency: Individuals appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d)
Physic! al Standards: Applicants must meet physical standards for the posit! ion. A physical examination prior to placement is required
Certification: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field. Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for certification of radiologic competence may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate dental assistant under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D). Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. This [will result in removal from the GS-681 series and] may result in termination of employment.

Education: Successful completion of a 1! -year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental AssociationÂ's Commission on [Dental] Accreditation [(CODA)]

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying

NOTE: Certification in basic life support methods is highly desirable

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
GS-6

Experience: At least 1 year of experience [equivalent to] the next lower grade level (i.e. GS-5) that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level

Assignment: Employee serves at the full performance level with the ability to perform full range of duties with some independence in assigned specialties, with indirect supervision from the lead dental assistant, dental assistant supervisor or treating dentist. Assignments at this level include, but are not limited to: using the concepts of four-handed dentistry; assisting with specialty procedures including oral su! rgery, periodontal therapy, endodontic, prosthodontic and implant place! ment and restoration; anticipating surgeons/specialists needs at each stage of treatment; taking preliminary impressions; selecting and manipulating a variety of gypsums and waxes; pouring, trimming and evaluating the quality of diagnostic casts; fabricating custom trays.
