DUTIES:
The incumbent is assigned to the Sub-Specialty Surgical Clinics/ENT Surgery section of the Office of Nursing Service . The section, care line, or department description and patient population served is as defined in applicable Scope of Service. The Nurse I, Level 1 function as a primary nurse for a defined group of patients for her/his shift. Incumbent maybe assigned to cross cover in other clinical areas within his/her competency level. Incumbent will be proficient and demonstrate competency and ability to either set up or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as applicable for all equipment for which he/she has been trained. The nurse will utilize the standards to guide their performance and as measures to sustain for current roles and expectations as well as requirements for promotion to the next grade level. The incumbent must familiarize self with how their activities impact VA's goal to ! implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, w! ater, land, and other natural and cultural resources. In accordance with the goals of the VA GEMS program, seeks to cost -effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable Federal, State and local environmental; public health; and resource protection laws, regulations, and VA requirements. Seeks to incorporate practices necessary to implement the requirements of Executive order 13423, "Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy and Transportation Management. Duties and functions are included in the four dimensions of nursing as outlined below.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency

and

accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of course work equivalent to a nursing degre! e in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
RN-BC Registered Nurse, Certified (Ambulatory Care) or Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN)

One (1)-Two (2) years Medical-Surgical experience in Ambulatory Care/Hospital setting.

Demonstrates effective communication, verbally or written, with co-workers and other health disciplines

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evalu! ated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of qualit! y with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:

Professional Development: performance, education/career development;

Ability to distinguish shades of colors

Typing intermittently for approximately one to five hours per day

Reaching above shoulder required to obtain supplies or light objects

Fine motor movements of hand/fingers required to pump blood pressure bulb to obtain blood pressure readings up to 10 times per day.

Hearing acuity to auscultate using stethoscope (i.e. blood pressure, lung sounds, etc).

Corrected vision to 20/30

Ability to exert 20 lbs of pressure to compress an adult chest 2" for approximately 1-2 minutes (CPR)

Frequent hand washing/sanitizing required

Environmental factors:
Frequent use of computers.

May be exposed to blood/body fluids or infectious diseases.
