SURGICAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN
Surgical Tech

SUMMARY

Participates in managing and evaluating surgical patient care activities. Organizes the medical environment, performs and directs support activities in patient care situations, including contingency operations and disasters.Assists professional staff in providing patient care for the surgical patient before, during, and after surgery. Performs scrub and circulating duties in the operating room (OR). Assists with post-anesthesia recovery of patients. Processes, stores, and distributes sterile supplies. Participates in activities related to the OR and Central Sterile Supply Services (CSSS). Performs duties in general surgery.

FACILITY

The Mike OCallaghan Medical Center is comprised of approximately 1400 personnel who are dedicated to providing preve! ntive, emergency and acute care services for approximately 22,! 000 active-duty members and their dependents.

The Center has begun adding new services and a larger capacity for care. The hospital was re-designated in this year's defense authorization bill, clearing it for expansion with a $50 million renovation planned for the next two fiscal years.

To Qualify You Must Meet The Following:
Completion of an accredited surgical service and clinical course.

Completion of a surgical technologist program recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).

Have at least 12 months of experience within the last 36 months as a surgical services technician.

Receives, decontaminates, and cleans soile! d patient care items.

Assembles, wraps, and sterilizes instrument sets, supplies, and linen packs. Stores, maintains, and distributes sterile patient care items.

Assists the circulating nurse with preparing records, reports, and requests. Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory.

Performs scrub duties in the Operating Room. Scrubs hands and arms and dons sterile gown and gloves. Prepares and maintains sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment of draped tables and stands. Counts sponges, needles, instruments, and related items with circulating nurse before, during, and after surgical procedures. Assists the operative team with applying sterile drapes to the surgical field. Passes instruments, sutures, and other supplies to the sterile operative team. Anticipates surgeons needs, and provides additional assistance as directed. Cares for surgical specimens on the sterile field. Cleans and prepares instruments and reusable supplies for ter! minal sterilization and decontamination.

Performs general duti! es in the surgical arena (Duties in the Operating Room Element include (but are not limited to) surgical scrub duties, circulator duties, float duties, restocking, and patient transportation. Duties in Central Sterile Processing Services include (but are not limited to), decontamination of instrumentation, pick-up/delivery of dirty and sterile items, assembling instrument sets, operating various sterilizers and equipment, gathering supplies for surgical cases, restocking, and maintaining linen and supply inventories.
